Description Currently, the field of comparative literature spans a large variety of multidisciplinary approaches, one of them being the incorporation of reception theory. Usually, reception theory within comparative literature analyzes the reception of a literary work across countries or cultures. While often enlightening, the focus on one author’s work can be limiting. One solution to this problem would be to analyze the reception of different works/authors in their respective countries. By discussing the initial reception of Josef Škvorecký’s Zbabělci in Czechoslovakia and the early works of the Beat Generation in the USA, a careful analysis of two similar receptions is able to show a new direction for the application of reception theory in comparative literature.
