Description | The book introduces history of two civilisation areas in the present Vietnamese territory: one of the Viets in the north developing under direct influences of China and the other of Champa in the south formed by small independent indianized communities. While the growth of the Vietnamese statehood by the 15th century reached its height in the creation of a centralized Confucian realm, Champa in the same time suffered a far-reaching defeat resulting in the gradual regress in the following centuries. Behind the chronological narrative of Vietnamese chronicles, some general tendencies are highlighted: cosmopolitan and syncretic character of Vietnamese society under the millennium-long Chinese rule or shifts of power between Buddhist monkhood, military warlords and Neo-Confucian civil service. |
