Description | The second part of the series about the small section of the Caucasus biodiversity hotspot – Georgian Colchis Region (focused only on the area around the city Batumi) – presents the main vegetation types. The attention is paid to the supposed natural forests in this region – the deciduous temperate rainforests with evergreen shrub layer. Due to the long-lasting human impact, the Colchic Lowland was strongly deforested in ancient times, the forests were preserved mainly in mountains and their foothills. The species structure, origin and management of several types of mesophilous forests are described altogether with common non-forest natural and artificial vegetation types. |
