Description | ABSSSI - acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections - is a new definition of skin infections, introduced by the US Food and Drug Administration in 2013. It should replace formerly used terms as uncomplicated and complicated skin and soft tissue infections, due to the necessity of different therapeutic approach. Serious infections often need further intervention - abscess drainage, incision, hospitalization, intensive care. New definition should be used in clinical studies with antimicrobial substances. FDA defined ABSSSI as celullitis/erysipelas, wound infection, major cutaneous abscess with minimum lesion surface area of 75cm2. Most common etiological agents of ABSSSI are primary pathogens Streptococcus pyogenes and Staphylococcus aureus, including MRSA. |
