| Description | Morphological paradigms can be ordered so as to observe the *ABA restriction, i.e. such that only contiguous cells in a paradigm are syncretic. Syncretisms thus reveal a hierarchy in paradigms, which is in turn accounted for in terms of a hierarchy of underlying features. Consequently, syncretisms can be used as a tool for the diagnosis of feature structures. |
