| Description | The first part of the presentation will introduce a newly created method for measuring above-average mathematical ability in pupils of 3rd to 5th elementary grades (the TIM test). Selected evidence of validity, reliability and other psychometric indicators will be presented with respect to the practical use of the test. The second part of the presentation will be devoted to specific empirical findings using data from the pilot and standardization studies of the TIM test. Using the so-called IRTree model, we will focus on the separation of mathematical ability (the correctness of the solution) and problem-solving style defined by various types of error (omitted vs. unsuccessfully solved problems). We will show, for example, how the IRTree model can be used to investigate whether the teacher's influence is higher on the pupils' mathematical abilities or in their problem-solving style; to what extent do teachers differ in the rigor of their assessment; whether the exceptionally gifted pupils differ from their peers only in their mathematical ability or even in their problem-solving style. The results will be discussed with respect to the possible limits of the study. |
