| Description | The authors of this book understand and introduce Baťa’s family houses to the readers as a part of a broader social and economic system of the organized modernity in a way this period was described by the German sociologist Peter Wagner. The idea of company housing is a manifestation of two modern tendencies (1) to the emancipation of (and not only) the worker and his family and (2) to his disciplination at the same time. The philosophy of the rental company housing was based on the assumption that well provided employee is a good and loyal employee. This is the topic of the first chapter of the book. The second chapter depicts the standardized system of planning and building the houses and whole quarters of the city and the administration of this process. The third chapter explains the ways how employees could secure a tenancy agreement: Flats in semidetached houses or fourplexes were accessible only to vetted employees with families and with good references from both their professional and private lives. In addition, the usage of the houses was also under the control of the housing department of the factory. The fourth chapter focuses on the customization of the originally standardized and identical houses. The modern process of individualization can be seen as one of the reasons for the changes of the houses occurring during the decades of their existence. Finally, fifth and sixth chapters deal with the example of the impact of the factory housing policy outside the Czechoslovak borders and depict the development, expansion and decline of East Tilbury, the British seat of the company. The book has an extensive image attachment containing photos and technical drawings of selected house types, original architectural details and interiors. The last part of the book is english translation of the chapters. |
