Description | Studies of people with visual impairments show that this group is as vulnerable, or even more vulnerable to addictions than intact people. As regards problems of addiction people with health disabilities are what are know as hidden groups, i. e. because educational and social workers often devote attention primarily to problems directly related to their disabilities, any risk use of alcohol or marijuana among them may be overlooked. The aim of our study was to provide (to an extent restricted by the scope and type of our sample) some insight into the attitudes of people with visual impairment to the use of alcohol and marijuana. A qualitative approach enables us to get a sense of the way that the actors themselves speak of their experiences and the frameworks in which they themselves set it. If offers an enlarged picture with also provides us with quantitative survey data (albeit very limited) on the dependency-related behaviour of people with visual disabilities. The article is based on the qualitative study realised in the form of focus groups. No model that has not also been described in the context of intact society emerged in any identified type of use of alkohol and marijujuana (as a socialising element, as a relaxant, as medication). The prevalence of all the needst to which actors react by alcohol or marijuana use was, however, more frequent among people with sight disability, whether we are speaking of the need to feel included in society and acquire a certain social status, to forget problems, relaxation and also the need for reflief from psychological and physical difficulties. |
