Description Yersiniosis affects wild and domestic animals as well as humans. Pathogenic Yersinia enterocolitica is the most common causative agent of human yersiniosis and contaminated food is the major source of infection. The prevalence of anti-Yersinia antibodies and the presence of pathogenic Y. enterocolitica (ail-positive) in wild boars (n=135) hunted in three localities of the Czech Republic were investigated. Anti-Yersinia antibodies were found in 69.6% of the animals without any observed difference between young (under one year old) and adult animals. Molecular detection revealed pathogenic Y. enterocolitica in 16.3% of faecal samples with a slightly higher prevalence among young animals. In conclusion, wild boars could be reservoirs of pathogenic Yersinia for humans and animals and good hygienic practice during slaughtering and handling of the meat including sufficient heat treatment before consumption is highly recommended.
