Description | Ancient mystery cults can be seen as a unique expression of the religiosity of the Greco-Roman world still vivid in the imagination of modern Europeans. Their emergence and existence, however, also attest, in a very specific way, the gradual change in the concept of religion in European thinking. Some of the characteristic features that religion has in contemporary Europe are for the first time recognisable in these ancient mystery cults. The lecture will present ancient mystery cults in their historical context, focusing on their selected representatives (Eleusinian Mysteries, Orphic Mysteries, Mysteries of Isis, Mysteries of the Great Mother Goddess and Mysteries of Mithras), and illuminate the importance of the heritage of ancient mysteries for the future development of the concept of religion in the history of Europe. |
