Description | 19th century philanthropy may be interpreted as a measure for urban elites to create and confirm their elite position and by the same to promote their values by founding important public institutions in the city. The paper analysed the role of heterogeneous elites in the formation of care for the children at risk in Brno. The trend of creating huge instituions of residential care was explained by the need of urban elites for prestigious publicity. It traced the changes in the public discourse at the period, when the public financing was increasing and the institutes expanded. |
