Description | Messalina was born in the Julio-Claudian dynasty around 20 AD. Her family tree and extraordinary beauty predetermined her to become the wife of one of the most powerful men in Rome. But at age 18, her cousin, Caligula, decided that she had to marry her thirty years older uncle Claudius. Her new husband stood at the very edge of all political and power events. He was educated and intelligent, but he probably lived in seclusion. But during the constant political struggles for power, it probably saved both of them. After the murder of the already insane Caligula, the soldiers declared Claudius to be the emperor, because he was closest living adult relative to the death emperor. And neglected Messilina could finally settle on the most powerful ruler's throne of antiquity. |
