Description | Viruses of the genus Norovirus are among the most common non-bacterial agents of epidemic gastroenteritis. The disease affects all age groups. A very low infective dose coupled with a large number of variants and the short duration of the acquired immunity allow the spread of these viruses in population. Actual numbers of infected people are likely to exceed those reported due to the short-term illness (2 to 3 days) mostly without the need of medical intervention. Typical symptoms include acute onset of nausea, vomiting, abdominal cramps, muscle pain and bloodless diarrhea. Norovirus is one of the most frequently mentioned causative agent of infections associated with contamination of water sources. Although the transmission of viral particles most often occurs through interpersonal contact, water is a significant vector for their spread. |
