| Description | The question of the meaning of Czech national existence was raised in the first half of the 19th century by František Palacký. In 1886, the issue of Czech national existence and culture was addressed by H. G. Schauer in his article Our Two Questions (Naše dvě otázky). In his work The Czech Question (Česká otázka, 1895), T. G. Masaryk related the Czech national identity to the idea of humanism and supported his belief by historical arguments. The work stimulated a long series of responses in the debate on the meaning of Czech history. Masaryks philosophy of nation contributed in this context to the emergence of civil society, political community, and the establishment of the state. Masaryk characterized his approach as that of political realism. The fundamental idea of his national programme was the moral progress of society. |
