Description | A series of ferrocene derivatives bearing either substituted or unsubstituted saturated five- and sixmembered nitrogen-containing heterocycles was synthesized. Some of these compounds showed clear cytotoxicity towards ovarian cancer cells in doses comparable to or even lower than Cisplatin, treatment of choice for ovarian cancer. The most promising ferrocene derivative was chosen to determine the mechanism of action inside SK-OV-3 cells. We used differential pulse voltammetry to measure low levels of accumulated drugs, which identified transferrin receptors as prominent transporters of ferrocenes. The important part of our work also consists in determining the mode of action consisting predominately in production of reactive oxygen species inside the cancer cells. |
