Description The article looks at a series of exhibitions of paintings and antiques held in Brno in the second half of the 19th century that drew extensively on the private collections of the local nobility and citizen in Brno. Primary attention is devoted to an art and antiques exhibition that took place in late winter 1862 in support of the victims of recent destructive flooding, and to an exhibition of paintings by old masters prepared in 1877 by the Art Department (Kunst-Sektion)of the Moravian Industrial Association (Mährischer Gewerbeverein) as part of its regular shows of contemporary art. Drawing on partially preserved catalogues from the exhibitions and especially on reactions in the contemporary press, it presents new findings on the character and focus of private collecting in Brno at that time and significantly extends our knowledge about some of the collector.
