Description | The presentation focused on verbs of speech used for introducing direct speech in Late Latin and the change occurred from the times of Classical Latin. The verbal forms dixit, dicens, ait, inquit, most frequently used in selection of Late Latin texts, were analysed. It was shown that Late Latin texts displayed a higher variability of introducers, whereas in Classical Latin inquit prevailed. Frequency of use was considered with focus on new forms that in Classical Latin were rarely used or had a different function. The development of introducers was considered within the framework of grammaticalization. |
