Description | The character and role of rituals and sacraments and their relationship to salvation in the Reformation are the key themes of Max Weber's theories as well as the theories of secularization. The same themes are essential to the czech medieval thinker Petr Chelčický, in whose writings we can observe the same processes (individualization, democratization, disenchantment of salvation, disenchantment of ritual) that are central in this theories. This presentation, inspired by Philip Gorski's research program "Historicization of the Secularization Debate", explores the possibility of using the combining of sociological and historical approaches to the theoretically grounded interpretation of the concept of the sacraments in writings of Petr Chelčický. |
