Description | In the present contribution the Baltic and Slavic ichthyonyms for ‘bleak / Alburnus alburnus’ are studied from the point of view of word formation and etymology. On the basis of existing etymological attempts a new solution is proposed, explaining the fishname with help of one of characteristic features of this fish, golden slime on its scales. The new etymology demonstrates their common origin in the compound *aus- + *kléyo/á- ‘(fish characterized by its) golden slime’. This ichthyonym would further solidify the origin |
