| Description | The present paper deals with the theoretical work Aspects of the Novel (1927) written by English writer and literary critic E. M. Forster (1879–1970). It is not the first theoretical work about the genre of the novel. Forster's work was created at the beginning of the 20th century when some theoretical works about the genre of the novel were known, but, on the other hand, the beginning of the 20th century was the time when it came to reassessment of former methods and attitudes to a literary work, and also to the theory of the novel. The author of the paper focuses on connections with Russian literature, concretely with novels by L. N. Tolstoy (War and Peace) and F. M. Dostoyevsky (Brothers Karamazov), but also on the definition of the novel, characters and polemics with other critics. |
