Description | The paper focuses on a unique and yet overlooked source which offers an interesting insight into a daily life at an Italian late medieval castle in times of war. It is a list of guards as well as other defenders of the castle of Collalto (north of Treviso) from 1373 which contains also a set of rules for them. After a short introduction into the history of the Collalto family and a description of the source, the author goes on to show what circumstances and motives may have induced the lord of the castle, Count Rambaldo IX, to have the document in question drawn up. Subsequently, two principal aspects are analysed by means of the source: social structure of the garrison and defence system of the castle of Collalto. |
