| Description | The sixth largest city in present-day Russia has almost 1 170 000 inhabitants. It was almost forgotten, especially abroad, that in the years of threatening the Soviet metropolis of Moscow with a Nazi invasion during the Second World War, this relatively small town was counted as the temporary capital of the "Country of Soviets". There were 23 foreign embassies during the WW2 here. Its historical architectural and economic development, geographical features, current running changes, and its unusual mountainous vicinity in the Russian plain are presented. The past and the present of the city are bound with military and space rocket production, as well as with growing touristic potential. |
