| Description | Greek writer Nikos Kazantzakis, known mainly as a novelist, was also a poet and a dramatist. Three of his plays depict the very last moments of three byzantine emperors, who due to their extraordinary fate left an important sign in Greek folklore and modern literature. The first play is dedicated to the Julian (332–363), who due to his attempt to establish paganism gained in the Christian Byzantine Empire the epithet the Apostate. The second tragedy described the last hours of famous general Nikephoros Fokas (912–969) and the third the hopeless fight of the legendary defender of Constantinople Constantine XI Palailogos (1405–1453). The aim of this lecture is to present the Kazantzakis’ tragedies with byzantine topics, to compare the characteristics of emperors depicted in them and in the contemporary sources and finally to incorporate the byzantine tragedies in the wider context of Kazantzakis’ works. |
