Description | In the past few years, the emergence and the development of the social media have profoundly affected not only interpersonal communication but also the various forms of traditional media. This has resulted in the transformation of existing media genres, as well as the development of some new formats of mass-mediated communication. In many respects, this situation has led to the dilution of the boundaries between public/private, mainstream/fringe, news/entertainment, reporting/commentary, information/evaluation, etc. In this panel, we wish to investigate the mutual relationship between the news and the social media, with a focus on the discursive realization of diverse linguistic and interactional phenomena related – among others – to recontextualization, resemioticization and remediation of content. Theoretically, the papers will be based in media discourse analysis, sociolinguistics and interactional pragmatics, discussing synchronic and potentially also diachronic aspects of news media genre change. |
