Description In the case of microbiological contamination of aquatic resources, mainly possible bacterial agents have been recently discussed. In recent years, however, viruses have come to the fore as significant agents of the disease associated with these contaminations. The most common are viruses causing gastroenteritis. Genus Norovirus is one of the most common non-bacterial agents of these diseases. Typical symptoms include rapid onset of nausea, abdominal cramps, muscle aches, vomiting and non-bloodynon-bloody diarrhea. Diseases caused by noroviruses are problematic due to a low infective dose, a large number of variants and a short-term specific acquired immunity. In most cases, the illness is mild and short-lived which leads to an underestimation of the actual incidence of these illnesses of which many remains unreported. During the years 2013-2018 samples of drinking and industrial waters from the whole Czech Republic were tested to detect the presence of human norovirus genogroups I and II. Two optimized methods for virus particle isolation were used, filtration through negatively charged membrane filters and organic flocculation. In order to detect the viral genome, a real-time reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction was used. Currently, a multiplex detection method using xMAP (Luminex Corporation, USA) is also in development to help detect up to 50 different targets in one reaction. Routine testing of water resources for the presence of noroviruses is not one of the routine procedures. However, it is clear from the gained results that a relatively high number of positive samples have been detected in water sources in our country. This fact must be taken into account when assessing the risks associated with possible contamination of water resources.
