| Description | The paper focuses on the portrait of a stranger in Egon Hostovskýs work. The contextual part deals with the genesis and development of this theme in different periods of Hostovskýs work. To what extent are the protagonists strangers by their own decision and to what extent is the position of a stranger imposed on them? To want extent is Hostovský in his prose trying to come to terms with emigration, inner exile, assimilation, integration and ethnic minorities? These are the questions considered below. Constant features of Hostovskýs poetics will be also mentioned, including the movement of individual characters in a convergent space, which implies their limited existence, or motifs of metaphysical guilt which makes the characters wander like 20th centurys Ahasvers. The actual analytical space consists of three war novels which were published in a collection Cizinci hledají byt (1967): Listy z vyhnanství, Sedmkrát v hlavní úloze and Cizinec hledá byt. The novel Úkryt is also analysed. |
