| Description | Opening keynote speech at a conference. Adopting Benjamin Moffitt's definition of populism as a political style and performance, this talk traces some of the linguistic repertoires available to politicians and the ways in which they skilfully draw on shared cultural context in order to construct scandal talk. I argue that populist media performances are heavily contextualized speech events because they need to relate to cultural stereotypes that are, on the one hand, shared with the audiences but, on the other, may need to be communicated in a covert manner. |
