| Description | The hymns by Callimachus, one of the prominent Alexandrian poets of the 3rd century BCE, are rich with examples convenient for investigating the ethics of various social classes of the Ptolemaic Egypt. One of them is to be found in the hymn on Demeter, where royal parents try anxiously to hide the social implications of the outrage of their son Erysichthon according to the goddess. The narrator subsequently takes a peculiar stand to their tale, and in the end, Erysichthon´s story proves to be not only a traditional vehicle of morals but also a useful informant of the real ethics of a Hellenistic man. |
