Description | The river bars of the Labe River belonging to the habitat 3270 Muddy river banks with Chenopodion rubri p. p. and Bidention p. p. vegetation (Natura 2000) are unique within the Czech Republic due to their large extent and high quality. The planned construction of the weir in the Labské údolí site of Community importance (SCI) would cause serious and irreversible disruption to such habitats. The Labské údolí SCI represents a part of the continuum of river bar habitat including the Porta Bohemica SCI situated upstream, as well as a long section of the well-preserved Labe River in Germany. These river bars are the only localities for the critically endangered species Corrigiola littoralis in the Czech Republic. Several numerical analyses of phytosociological relevés and data on habitat mapping, comparing the Labe River with other rivers in the Czech Republic were performed. The majority of the analysed river bar communities were classified by an expert system into the association Echinochloo cruris-galli-Chenopodietum polyspermi. Sparse initial vegetation with relatively high species richness and the lack of dominant species describes the most characteristic community of river bars of the Labe River. Due to their extent and specific environmental conditions, the river bars on the Labe River predominantly harbour light-demanding, thermophilous species of open habitats and species which are rather rare in the habitats of the Czech Republic in general. The results showed that it is impossible to compensate for the river bar habitat of the Labské údolí SCI in the same extent, quality and under the same ecological conditions, by its protection on any other river in the Czech Republic. |
