Description According to the current results of modern material analyses performed on 16th–18th century string instruments (Amati, Stradivari, Guarneri), the most widespread varnishes was mixtures of drying oils (linseed oil) and Pinaceae resin. On the basis of these results and in confrontation with the original ancient recipes, varnishes with different ratios of the main natural materials (linseed oil, colophony, mastic) were prepared. The main aim of this work was to compare physical-mechanical properties of these varnishes and study the modifications that may occur in this kind of varnishes after exposing them to climatic factors of degradation. The goal was to evaluate the suitability of the proposed recipe for current violin practice.
