Description | The article focuses on urban imagery depicted in the short story “A tragédia de D. Ramón” (Caminhos magnéticos, 1938) by Branquinho da Fonseca (1905-1974). Based primarily on the myth-criticism and phenomenological method (Sansot, 1971; Hodrová, 2006), the present analysis stresses various literary parallels that can be found in Fonseca’s short story. From this point of view, two representational modes can be observed: the “sensorial” city, in which a literary dialogue with the poetry of Cesário Verde can be detected, and the “hallucinatory city”, which promotes a dialogue with the imaginary of Raul Brandao and Fialho de Almeida. In both cases the motif of the night walking in the city can be read as a symbolic demand for the self, which reveals a psychological drama of the protagonist, as well as a trauma of a migrant in the 20th century. |
