Description | All the empirically atteinable subjects are organisms, it means biological individualitiess. Despite the efforts made in the last 20 years, biology has failed to provide a satisfactory definition of the individual, or organism. It is a consequence of a positivist approach dominating evolutionary doctrine, which refuses to recognize aspects of individuality such as functional integrity or autonomy of the organism and, above all, the ability to experience, to be a subject. Existing "definitions" focus on circumstances that are more or less loosely related to individuality, respectively. they are a condition or support, but not a sufficient cause. Probably none of these "definitions" apply to all living organisms. The solution belongs to philosophy, in the author's opinion above all phenomenological. |
