Description | One of the interesting features of the Estonian partitive is that it tends to be replaced by oblique cases. For instance, in a subject position, we would have a phrase like "bag-NOM potatoes-PART" meaning 'a bag of potatoes. But in oblique cases, the partitive is gone, and we get phrases such as "bag-INESSIVE potatoes-INESSIVE," meaning 'in a bag of potatoes. The talk will address the apparently universal and Estonian particular features of this construction in comparison to other languages with similar systems. |
