Description | Selenium (Se), as an essential trace element is absolutely required for thyroid hormones (THs) synthesis and biotransformations. Three selenoenzymes, iodothyronine deiodinases (IDs) of types 1, 2 and 3 (D1, D2 and D3, respectively) have been identified with 5 (outer-ring) and/or 5- (inner-ring) monodeiodinating activities, which play an important role in the tissue-specific regulation of THs bioactivity (Bianco et al., 2002; Köhrle, 2002). |
