Description | Background.Hoeksema (2018) argues for the PPI status of high degree predicates (as adjectivegorgeous) and claims that their sub-class, verbal predicates like The garden was swarming with bees (swarm construction: SC, L-construction) are PPIs too. His empirically convincing arguments are based mostly on positive corpus evidence and lack of negated swarms in corpora. We follow previous experimental work on Slavic swarms (Dočekal & Šafratová 2019), which shows that i) L-construction swarms are maximum-standard degree constructions (confirming Hoeksema 2009) but ii) unmodified swarms don’t behave as PPIs. Our research goal was to bring new reliable data about polarity effects of high degree vague predicates as their profile is very different from the more studied and understood existential type of PPIs (Spector 2014 a.o.). |
