Description | Russian nouns that refer to male persons usually have their counterparts in female forms. Some masculine nouns can refer to specific persons of male gender. Russian does not derive feminine forms from masculine nouns but uses nouns as universal forms, i. e. the same nouns indicates individuals of both genders. The large number of new-formations in contemporary Russian (especially in colloquial speech)using suffixes to indicate the feminine shows that the derivation of feminine forms from masculine nouns is becoming a activite process in Russian. |
