Description | The paper focuses on one of the current global trends related to the expansion of the sharing economy and short-term accommodation services on the Internet platform. The paper aims to evaluate the socio-economic impacts of the Airbnb service in the capital city of Prague, which is one of the most visited cities in Europe. The Airbnb phenomenon, which indirectly contributes to overtourism and the burden on city centres, usually leads to higher house prices, unequal competition, changes in residential areas, and other negative externalities for the residents. The paper applies the desk research method based on the processing of secondary data, supplemented by own observation and in-depth interview with a representative of IPR Prague. When comparing the specific situation and the measures implemented to deal with this problem in other model destinations, serving as a benchmark for the case study, it can be stated that in the case of Prague, the initiative often comes spontaneously from below. The implementation of measures is often carried out only after repeated complaints by residents. |
