| Description | In this volume we offer a translation of the fourth part of the treatise Ars Conjectandi (1713) by Jacob Bernoulli. The treatise represents an important contribution to the history of probability calculus and the history of statistics. In the fourth part, Bernoulli wondered how we should infer in situations that we are not able to decide on the basis of rational reasoning. In cases where logical reasoning in the sense of the so-called art of thinking, i.e. ars cogitandi, fails, we can resort to the art of estimation, i.e. ars conjectandi. |
