Description | Biological background: Chloride ion sensing is important in many fields such as clinical diagnosis (Huber et al., 1998; Jiang et al., 1998) environmental monitoring (Huber et al., 2000; Martin & Narayanaswamy, 1997; Montemor et al., 2006) and various industrial applications (Babu et al., 2008; Badr et al., 1999). Considering the fact that chloride channels play crucial role in physiological processes it is not surprising that missregulation of chloride ion transport by these channels can cause serious disorders. Cystic fibrosis is a disease in which gene encoding of a protein, called cystic fibrosis transmembrane regulator, which functions as a chloride channel in epithelial membranes, is mutated and thus its function is altered (Ratjen & Doring, 2003). Besides the importance of monitoring chloride ions in patients with this disease, monitoring chloride ion in the environment is needed. |
