Description | The present research supplements existing available data on the upper secondary school-leaving examination failure rate by designing a qualitative inquiry on students’ perception of failure causes and their subsequent life and educational pathways. The research design is the life history approach. The data presented in the paper come from the pilot part of the study, with ten students who failed to pass the school-leaving examination in various types of schools and from various areas. In the pilot study, we apply a particular life history approach – the retrospective life history version. The pilot study biographic interviews recall what happened in the life of these students during the two years after this failure experience. The pilot study not only provides rich data material for analysis but also prepares researchers for the following part of the research, in which another group of students will be observed. |
