Description | This study looks at the presentation of Hussite Bohemia in the Italian sources from 1415–1436. Generally, Italian chronicles did not concern themselves with events in the Czech lands, and if they did so, this was only marginally. One exception is the later work of Enea Silvio Piccolomini, which thanks to its widespread reception created the dominant (and negative) image of Bohemia as a land of heretics. The subject of analysis consists of three sources which for various reasons avoid the generally accepted stereotypes and offer a differing view of Hussitism. The author highlights the famous portrait by Poggio Bracciolini of the burning of Jerome of Prague, and the chronicle by the Sienese painter Bindino da Travale, also known to historical research; a close analysis is then focused on the despatches from the Mantuan ambassador Simone da Crema from 1436, where he gave an interesting and pragmatic appraisal of the Basel Compacts. |
