Keywords Linear neutron generator; IEC neutron generator
Description This article focuses on description of two different neutron fields of linear neutron generator with solid-state target and of cylindrical Inertial Electrostatic Confinement (IEC) neutron generator with gas filling. They use a deuterium–tritium (D–T) reaction that produces neutrons with energy of 14.1 MeV (in the range of 13–16 MeV), depending on the direction and the energy of the incoming deuterium nucleus. Spectrometric system NGA-01 was used to characterize neutron spectra in the proximity of generators. Measured neutron spectra have been compared with simulations realized via MCNP6 computer code. According to the theoretical prediction, these two types of generators produce different ne-utron fields. The neutron spectrum of the linear generator varies depending on the angle between the detector and generator longitudinal axes. Both experimental results and simulation show a shift of the neutron energy 14.1 MeV peak in neutron spectrum. The shape and the position of the neutron energy peak from IEC generator depend also on the position of the detector. Compared to a linear generator, there is no significant energy shift of the peak in the spectrum, but for measurement in the plane perpendicular to the longitudinal axis of the generator, the 14.1 MeV peak splits into two peaks that can be measured and distinguished. These was measured by stilbene detector and verified by the diamond detector, which was also used for characterization of the IEC type generator.
