Description | Tumoral calcinosis is one of the unusual but serious complications of hemodialysis. In renal failure patients, hypercalcaemia, hyperphosphathaemia and tertiary hyperparathyroidism occur, resulting in the precipitation of calcium salts with extraskeletal calcifications. Chronic tissue inflammation and activation of macrophages in extraskeletal calcifications cause tissue devitalization. Calcifylaxis also contributes to the formation of ulceration, during which calcium salts are deposited in the walls of arterioles, which leads to ischemia and necrosis. Theoretical information concerning this rare complication of hemodialysis is extended in the article by a clear case report of a patient with extensive leg ulceration in the field of tumoral calcinosis. |
