Description | Innovation is perceived as a source of economic growth and competitiveness of enterprises, regions and countries. Nevertheless, innovation can also contribute to addressing important social and environmental challenges. Policymakers across Europe are aware of this fact and are therefore increasingly focusing on mission-oriented innovation policy. Mission-oriented innovation policy is an innovation policy that aims at solving critical societal challenges that go beyond one policy field, and that is implemented to meet ambitious social and environmental objectives. In recent years, the need for such a concept has been underlined by both the European Union and the OECD. For example, the European Commission uses this approach to design the Horizon Europe 2021-2027 framework programme. In our paper, we explain the features of the mission-oriented innovation policy and present two case studies from EU countries where this policy has been implemented. |
