Description | A review of the European Commission’s Market Definition Notice is an opportunity to consider the impact of a market definition to the analysis of the existence of a dominant position. The definition expresses substitutability of the products. As such, it represents only a part of the factors relevant for the assessment of a market power. The dominant position is a function of a market power. Economics developed valuable theories of market power, including the parity of a market power and inverse value of firm’s own price elasticity of demand (price elasticity of individual demand). Although it has been previously discussed among U.S. experts, the idea of assessing the market power via price elasticity of individual demand has never find a way into the European competition theory or practice. Given the impact of digitalisation and globalisation, definitions of relevant markets may become increasingly complicated. Although it still has its importance for other parts of competition assessments, in terms of the assessment of a market power, the use of the alternative measurement shall be accepted. |
