| Description | The concept of places of memory (les lieux des mémoires) [translated in some places as Realms of Memory] is firmly linked to the personality of Pierre Nora and at the same time to an interpretation focused on the forming of the modern French nation, or more exactly, the modern French state. This is pointed out by the French historian Catherine Horel, who has long been concerned with the definition of the places of memory of the Hapsburg monarchy. According to her, it is in the nationally and culturally complex milieu of Central and Central-Eastern Europe that it is possible to talk about several different or competing memories, which are served by various places of culture (museums), places of remembrance (cemeteries and monuments), places of identity of individual groups and finally places in which emotions must give way to reason. There are a number of definitions of the concept of places of memory. Although there has been a recent discussion about the extent to which Pierre Nora's original characterisation sill applies, it is possible to start from his definition: "Places of memory are mainly relics. An extreme form where commemorative consciousness persists in history, which calls to it because it does not know it. The concept of a place of memory is born as a result of the deritualization of our world. Places of memory are what produces, institutes, establishes, builds, proclaims, cunningly and voluntarily, a community that undergoes transformation and renewal." |
