Description Baron Trenck, an Austrian soldier and commander of the Trenck’s Pandurs, sentenced to life imprisonment in the fortress of Špilberk, died October 4, 1749. His body was laid to rest in the crypt of Brno’s Capuchin Monastery, where it underwent the natural mummification. This book summarizes the results of a unique three-year project in which Trenck’s mummy was studied by an interdisciplinary team of specialists using state-of-the-art methods of forensic anthropology, forensic medicine, and molecular biology. Gradually, the chapters uncover details about Trenck’s life as the elite soldier in the mid-1700s, seen through the lens of contemporary science. They shed light on principles which allowed the team to reconstruct Trenck’s physical appearance. They stress the fact that the 3D reconstruction is one of the first in the world to be made completely digitally and, more importantly, to be animated. Altogether, the book pays tribute to the legacy of an unusual historical figure with a close relationship to the city of Brno and is also an example illustrating successful collaboration of science and humanities in the attempts to deepen our understanding of the past.
