Description The aim of the research was the relative quantification of selected antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) at the inflow and outflow from the WWTP, in river water and sediments of the Svratka River using qPCR to estimate the efficiency of the WWTP Modřice in Brno in removing ARGs. The experiment was partly inspired by pan-European research that provided baseline picture of the presence of ARGs in treated wastewater in European countries. The research was further supplemented by sediment data and partly by culture techniques. In this paper we present a brief overview of the main of the results, which show that although the process of water treatment at the WWTP significantly eliminates the amount of ARGs, it still there is an enrichment of ARGs in the receiving water below the discharge of treated water from the WWTP. The results suggest that we are replicating trends found at other European WWTPs, both in terms of the abundance of selected ARGs in the environment and as well as in the effectiveness of their removal.
