Description | Based on a recent finding of the series of 32 Chinese prints from the Slatiňany mansion (Bohemia), this article examines the well-established topical category of beautiful women, some with infants, engaged in play and leisure. These prints were executed in the refined style of the Suzhou Taohuawu tradition, and also make use of the European technique of shading. It is therefore assumed they were produced for export, and indeed, the like of them is rarely seen in China. However, they are kept in Japanese, and European collections – on rare occasions still displayed in the original historical setting. The age of such interiors, as well as various details depicted in the images themselves (coiffure, clothing, furniture) help to date them to the Kangxi period. Next, Suzhou prints from the Veltrusy mansion are described. |
