Description The swarm-alternation is a relation between sentences such as "Bees are swarming in the garden" and "The garden is swarming with bees". There are two major theories attempting to explain the underlying semantics: Dowty´s dynamic texture hypothesis and Hoeksema´s high-degree hypothesis. Following Hoeksema´s theory, we account for the swarm-alternation in terms of degree semantics. Two experiments were conducted on Slovak data testing the acceptability of the swarm-constructions with different modifiers. The aim of this study was to investigate the degree nature of the swarm-constructions, focusing on the type of scale involved.
